WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
I recently (okay it was about 15 years ago now) sat through a seminar that was geared to advisors that sell life insurance, group benefits and do financial planning (YES, it was THAT exciting). In it, the speaker discussed a case where he had worked with a man over many years to build his business. They then designed a succession plan so that he could sell the business and go sailing in the Caribbean. You see, the man had a dream after all of those years working… he would go sailing in the Caribbean. Now, after all those years, that dream was coming into view (kind of reminds me of the old London Life, Freedom 55 commercials). As I sat there hearing this story and picturing this older gentleman getting ready to retire it made me think of how sad that story really was…..
WHY WOULD I SAY THAT?…..ME A GUY WHO LOVES SAILING AND HAS A SIMILAR DREAM?
Because I don’t think you should wait until retirement to go sailing? or to make any of your dreams come true for that matter. Why wait ‘til later when you never know what your health, or that of your spouse or friends might be? Retire when you want to, but enjoy life while you can.
WHY NOT GO SAILING NOW?
YOU CAN. Let’s go sailing in the British Virgin Islands NOW! Not sometime, not one day or even someday. Heck, I keep checking the calendar and finding the same thing… Someday isn’t anywhere on it!!!! No waiting until next year, not in 5 years or when we retire, NOW!, This winter!
This could be a vacation with your family or friends, some couples, a gang of the guys or your girls book club, or even just yourself if you’ve always wanted to give it a try and never knew where to start. It could be an incentive trip for your partners, key staff, a team building exercise, or some good clients.
This is not a typical stay at a resort where you lay next to the pool and be waited on. The kind of trip you might really enjoy but, a year down the road, you struggle to recall what you did. A sailing trip is a truly unique opportunity that very few people in the world ever get to experience. It will also be an adventure that you’ll remember and share forever. You can learn to sail if you like, or lay back and not do a thing until it’s your turn to make the rum punch. You can spend every day in a different harbour on a different island. You can sight-see, sunbathe, wander amongst the locals with neat restaurants, shops and bars to explore. You can swim, snorkel or SCUBA. Just don’t wait for SOMEDAY.
