This page is set to allow you to follow the progress of my first Atlantic Crossing. The passage departs from Mindelo, São Vicente (Cape Verde – off the coast of Africa) on January 22, 2019. The passage is scheduled to arrive in Le Marin, Martinique. on February 5, 2019. This is a distance of approximately 2,150 Nautical Miles (or around 4,000 km) and will take just over 2 weeks. We will be travelling with John Kretschmer aboard Quetzel, a 47 foot Kaufman Cutter with 6 or 7 total crew
The SPOT transmitter sends our location to a satellite and then back to a land base each hour. That position is then posted on the page shown below. The transmission and GPS location is somewhat weather dependent. In the event of heavy clouds or precipitation, the signal may be blocked. On my last trip, blocks as long as 6 or 7 hours were blocked by gales. Please do NOT worry or assume the worst. It is no different than losing cell service when you are out in the sticks or up in cottage country.
If you are interested in hearing about the trip afterwards. I’ll be speaking at the Port Whitby Marina “Toonie Tuesday” night on March 26th to share the story. Admission fee is…you got it…a toonie. Just show up.
